sale mail

It was another successful week for Inglis, this time on their online selling platform Inglis Digital. It was four Chris Waller trained 3-year-olds sold in conjunction with Coolmore and partners that topped the sale.

$1.475m was made between the four promising 3-year-old geldings. Coastwatch, a son of Fastnet Rock out of Encosta De Lago mare Bullion Mansion topped the sale with a price tag of $500,000. Originally purchased by a collective of high profile owners such as Coolmore, Sir Peter Vela and Chris Waller Racing for $750,000 at the 2020 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Coastwatch has won 3 races and made $564,950 on the track. These wins included the Group 3 Ming Dynasty and more recently the Group 2 Autumn Stakes at Caulfield. Perhaps his best performance on the track however was his Group 1 3rd placing in the Golden Rose, behind In The Congo and Anamoe. He was purchased by A P Chan and will head to Asia to continue his racing career.

“Coastwatch will be a wonderful addition to the current population of horses in Macau and I would like to see him representing Macau to run in the Hong Kong Macau Cup and even The Dubai World Cup Carnival,’’ Mr Chan said.

“I enjoy my experience as a racehorse owner in Macau, the horsemen and operators there are doing a good job and they deserve to have a good horse of this quality to run for them on the international stage.”

Another Fastnet Rock gelding was the 2nd highest sold lot, this one out of Group 1 winning O’Reilly mare O’Marilyn. O’President sold for $435,000 to A Value Consulting’s Dr Alan Lee, representing an owner in Hong Kong.

“The owner in Hong Kong has not decided yet whether to race in Australia or ship the horse immediately to Hong Kong. Either way, we are sure O’President will perform in top class races where ever he ends up next.” said Dr Lee.

Originally purchased for $520,000 and sold by a similar group of owners, O’President won the Group 2 Skyline Stakes in February last year. More recently, O’President finished 2nd to Rustic Steel in the $500,000 The Coast at Gosford.

Zoustar gelding Starman was the next top lot, going for $300,000 when Chris Waller Racing bought out their fellow owners. Starman was originally purchased at the Magic Millions 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $500,000 and since then has had 3 wins on the track, making $164,900 in prize-money. A recent trial when 2nd to O’President, beating home Home Affairs in 3rd had to have impressed the stable to stay involved.

Finally out of the quartet, Cape Breton, a Vancouver gelding, sold for $240,000 to Magnus Equine’s Willie Leung on behalf of a Hong Kong Client.

“He has good, solid form in Sydney as well as Queensland and looks to be a big, strong horse that moves well. I love the sire Vancouver, a son of Medaglia d’Oro who is the sire of Hong Kong champion Golden Sixty who I also purchased.” said Mr Leung.

Like Starman, Cape Breton was also purchased out of the Magic Millions 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale but for $600,000. Cape Breton won his first two races as a 2-year-old before failing in the Group 1 JJ Atkins. His form has been mixed, however, most recently he hasn’t been far away in the Listed Canberra Guineas and Daybreak Lover as well as a Group 2 5th in the Queensland Guineas late in April.

The next Inglis Digital Sale is not far away with the next Online Auction starting on May 20th.

For in-person sales, Magic Millions gets underway with their National Weanling, National Broodmare and National Yearling Sales on the 19th of May.

The National Broodmare Sale starting on the 24th of May is sure to attract a lot of attention when some of our best race fillies/mares go through the ring. The likes of Rubisaki, Tofane, Wandabaa, Yamazaki, Away Game just to name a few are all set to go through the ring.

The three National Magic Millions sales will conclude on the 2nd of June.

stallion of the week

Continuing from the successful sales of some of his progeny highlighted above, this week’s Stallion Of The Week is Fastnet Rock. Standing at Coolmore Australia for a fee of $165,000, Fastnet Rock began his stallion duties in Australia in 2005. He is the sire of 1883 progeny to race, 1334 winners (70.0%), earnings of over $214 million and 170 stakes winners.

On the track, Fastnet Rock was the champion 3YO colt & sprinter in Australia in 2005, had 6 career wins and made $1,724,100 in prize-money. As a 2-year-old, he ran 4th in the Group 1 Golden Slipper and 3rd in the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes. He won 2 Group 1’s as a 3-year-old, the Lightning Stakes and Oakleigh Plate. He also placed in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes and Newmarket Handicap.

Off the track, he has had an outstanding record as a stallion with 42 Group 1 winners sired worldwide. He is a proven sire of sires with 8 of his sons already siring Group 1 winners. It would be a long list to mention all of his notable progeny, however, I’ll name a few worth mentioning: Avantage, Mosheen, Atlantic Jewel, Merchant Navy, First Seal, Foxwedge and the list goes on.

In the sales ring this season we have seen yearlings by Fastnet Rock average $434,137 with 29 being sold for a total of $12,590,000. Not to mention the huge prices paid for the progeny on platforms such as Inglis Digital, with a couple recent ones mentioned above.

pedigree microscope

This week we take a look at the winner of the Group 1 South Australian Derby, Jungle Magnate. He was purchased from the 2020 Karaka National Yearling Sale in New Zealand for $75,000.

His sire is Tarzino, the winner of the VRC Derby, Rosehill Guineas and Australian Guineas. Standing at Westbury Stud, this is the 1st Group 1 win for the stallion, coming not long after the daughter of Tarzino, Gypsy Goddess ran 2nd in the Group 1 Australian Oaks. Trainer Mick Price is certainly confident his ex-galloper now stallion will have some potential stars on the track this time next year.

“That stallion is doing a good job. He was a bit unlucky that Doc Lawler’s Gypsy Goddess didn’t win a Group 1. We have a few by him that go good. This time next year we will have a big strong Tarzino back here.”

Jungle Magnate is the first foal of Casino Prince mare The Love Of Money. Whilst The Love Of Money was a non-winner, her dam Loving New was Champion 3YO Filly in Brazil in 2004-05, a country of origin you don’t often see on Australian/New Zealand pedigree pages. She was a multiple Group 1 winner in Brazil winning up to 2000m. Closer to home, son of Loving New, First Crush won the Listed Grafton Cup over 2350m and placed in a handful of other Listed races in Queensland.

With Jungle Magnate set to go out for a spell now according to trainer Mick Price, I’m sure we’ll see the stallion Tarzino be well respected by buyers and breeders going forward.
